There are TWO really hard things to learn when Group riding – we will deal with one of them in this blog:
WHICH WAY TO LOOK WHEN CHANGING LANES from Right lane to Left
The novice will look Left when moving Left thinking they are being Considerate and being Safety conscious
WRONG
When moving Left from the Right lane:
- Keep your eyes Straight ahead
- Move Smoothly to the Left lane
- Stop pedalling momentarily till you see the next wheel coming past you
- LOOK TO YOUR RIGHT so that you can see the next rider- they may be struggling- there may be a Gap- this the time to see what is going on behind you and help FIX IT
Some will argue that they look left so they don’t bump their fellow rider – there’s no need to worry because your fellow rider is looking straight ahead and can see what you are doing – you’re moving smoothly from the right lane to the left. AND it’s your fellow rider’s job to provide a Gap for you to move into after your Pace turn.
