
Functional Threshold refers to the maximum output that you’re able to maintain while your body can still remove the lactate acid being used by the muscles. With training, lactate threshold can be improved and your pace at functional threshold will increase over time so you can ride faster.
Having your magic numbers will provide the focus you need to improve. If you train with a power meter Functional Threshold Power is used to determine your power training zones; if you train with a heart rate monitor Functional Threshold Heart Rate is used to determine your heart rate training zones.
